Using the experiences of four close friends — Efua, Kemi, Rita, and Bola — Nigeria Men Will Stain Your White recounts what dating is like in Nigeria for the average Nigerian woman.
Efua happens to be the unique one in the squad as she is happily married (wishful thinking) to her high school sweetheart, Femi. Majoring as a therapist in modern-day Nigeria, Efua does have clients; however, since everyone wants to be “woke,” the average Nigerian youth would rather deal alone or deal drugs.
Particularly impressive to me was Zainab’s session with Efua. Peers frequently find themselves in similar situations, but once more, we tend to minimize these feelings out of fear of being “cancelled,” and since they are feelings, we are bound to finally express them. — Imagine holding back emotions for weeks, and then an event occurs that breaks you; you’ll pour out like an ocean. I like how Efua handled it, lol. It’s her job.
Kemi is clearly the smartest of the ladies, in my opinion. It’s pretty common to see adults and recent graduates wanting to leave home because they’re of age — which I don’t dispute — but watching Kemi resolved to accept her mother’s trash talk in order to save money for necessities rather than paying rent elsewhere is top-tier.
Would I tolerate it if I were in her shoes?
No, I wouldn’t, especially not for as long as she did, lol, but I can’t picture myself in her condition.
Kemi experienced troubles at home fr, from continuously reminding her folks that working remotely is a thing to dealing with their constant reminders of her unmarried status — lmao, her mother was quite vile.
But this marital pressure thing appears to be more severe on the ladies’ end. As women, we are constantly reminded of how old we are, how quickly our repro-clock ticks, and how we need to settle down sooner. It’s not unexpected that Tega, the person Kemi’s parents paired her up with, was such a scumbag — men should have a clock, too! Maybe that way they’ll remain humble.
You’ve probably heard girls say things like, “I prefer male friends to female friends.”
Well, then, they haven’t met the ladies in this book, who have such a strong sisterhood and bond- it’s giving Virtuousi’s ‘Is this a safe space?’. Still, I can understand why some girls say things like that — just look at how Efua handled her situation with Rita.
Speaking of Rita, she’s quite the character. A chronic punctual human — read that ironically because Rita can probably be late for her own wedding only that in this book there’s none. I mean she did experience a great deal at the hands of Adam’s descendants.
From a broken heart to a brief casala with a wannabe millionaire. Regardless of her experiences with men, I do concur with Efua that Rita had enormous expectations for a partner.
Now, having standards isn’t a bad thing, but setting the bar exceedingly high is bad because how many individuals on this green earth will check those boxes? Talmbout those looking for Tall, Dark and Handsome or Fair, Slim, and Thick, lmao! -look at what happened to Sister Sarah in this book.
Remember Bola?
Oh, dear Bola! If there is anyone, I feel awful for, it is she.
But why don’t individuals respect others personal information? -reading Bola’s encounter reminded me of the instances I had my personal information shared with strangers by individuals I allegedly knew, and truthfully, a big portion of the time, I always regret it. Anyway, this isn’t about me.
Bola went through a lot, and I honestly don’t know how she got through it all, but I’m glad she has friends.
The Efua& Rita Headline is a must-have for this review, lol.
First and foremost, what’s up with guys named Femi?
So apparently, Femi isn’t the sweet man we thought, and he decides to frame Rita so she doesn’t reveal the truth, knowing full well that Efua will undoubtedly believe him and reject Rita’s version of the story.
Tomorrow, we’ll say women are the problem — scoff.
This man literally knows his cards so well and of course it’s only a woman that will refuse to belief her friend because “He is her husband” -but let’s not play naive, if reverse was the case, I bet Femi would believe his GEE over his WIFE, but again, women ought to act like women, No?
Oh well, you should read Nigerian Men Will Stain Your White to find out how it ends.
Hopefully in another life Nigerian Men Will Keep Your White Clean.
P.S: If you loved reading “Nearly All The Men in Lagos are Mad” you’ll enjoy this book. It’s relatable and perfect for your jolly moments, read with friends, read with your girls. It’s a solid 9.
